It’s the Holiday Season, and one fun thing to do is to go see all of the great Christmas Lights in San Antonio. But, where to go? Here is our updated guide:
Boerne Family’s Huge Holiday Light Show Benefiting Young Cancer Patient
The Jones Family is helping a 4-year-old Leukemia patient named Laila Bull, who was diagnosed recently, in October. “Through a broken foot sustained by Michael in the process, 240 programming hours and more than two months of setting up, the Jones created their 2016 light show and are welcoming visitors to drop by and leave donations for little Laila”(Mendoza,M., MySA.com; Dec. 16, 2016). This is an absolute masterpiece! You must stop by! You don’t want to miss this light show, and it is for a good cause.
“So far, they have raised about $300 and some gift cards, which will all be given to the Bull family”(Mendoza,M., MySA.com; Dec. 16, 2016). Visitors are expected to increase this week, when more people are out of work and school for the holiday break. This light show is located at 208 Wollschlaeger Drive in Boerne.
San Antonio River Walk
More than 6,000 lights are up and the crowds are in a festive mood. Stop in for dinner at one of these great restaurants. Then, at dusk from December 2 – 18, you’ll see the Fiesta de las Luminarias. From December 9-11, you can stroll the Riverwalk while shopping for artisan crafts that are one of a kind at the Holiday Artisan River Walk Show. If you like music, go between December 1 – 18 for the Ford Holiday Boat Caroling. More than 185 school, church, company and civic choral groups participate each year. You can Join visitors from around the world in impromptu sing-a-longs from the patios of the River Walk restaurants. The Holiday Lights on the River Walk are beautiful and free to enjoy from now through January 16th.
Drive by the University of the Incarnate Word
Take an unguided tour to see nearly a million lights, just North of downtown on Broadway at Hildebrand. HOW LONG DO THE LIGHTS STAY ON you ask? The lights turn on nightly, from Dec 2nd through Jan 6, 2017.
The City of Windcrest
Near IH-35 at Walzem, Windcrest will have a sponsored lighting competition, as they have for decades. This year’s theme is “Safari Through Windcrest”. Important Dates to Remember. Contest Judging is Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016 at 6 p.m. LIGHTS STAY ON UNTIL 11 p.m., and the official City Hall Ceremony is Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016 starting at 6 p.m.
The Forum at Olympia Parkway
Located just north of Windcrest, out IH-35 to the intersection with Loop 1604, is a great light show! Some of the neighborhoods immediately behind the Forum are giving Windcrest a run for the money.
If you have time to drive up IH-35 past New Braunfels, to . It has one of the best drive-thru displays with animated figures and over a million lights. For $28+ tax for a carload, it is a delightful mile-long trek through a fantasy of holiday fun. You can purchase hot cocoa and kettle corn, too! If you are on the NW side, on your way out IH-10, check out Shavano Park. Some of the neighborhoods in the Shavano Park area, roughly from DeZavala Rd at NW Military Highway, are gorgeously lit up.
Don Strange Ranch
Continue out IH-10 West to the historic Don Strange Ranch in Waring, TX – between Boerne and Comfort. You’ll be rewarded with two miles of over two million lights, plus food, crafts, shopping, and family fun with Santa! $27 per vehicle. Open nightly through New Years Eve.
Celebrate New Year’s Eve Downtown with 250,000 of your favorite new friends!
Food and beverage booths, live music, and fireworks from the top of the 750′ tall Tower of the Americas – a great way to ring in the New Year IF you like crowds.
