In August of 1862 sixty German Texans from Comfort and surroundings decided to flee to Mexico, and next to New Orleans where they could join the Union Army. Confederate soldiers followed them and attacked their camp on the Nueces River. The Confederate Soldiers killed thirty-six German Freethinkers, including prisoners. After the war, their remains were brought back to Comfort for burial, at Monument Hill in Comfort, Texas, where a memorial called the “Treue der Union” (loyalty to the Union) was built in their memory.
